#Happy New Year… Jan 3, 2014 – 30 Years Ago Sam Todd’s Disappearance was Real.

Now there was an eerie feeling in the loft.  We left the door open that night and the downstairs door ajar, just in case, waiting for Sam like we were waiting for Elijah. It was a Tuesday and when we  woke up in the morning hoping Sam would have snuck in and curled up under a blanket. It was with hollow disappointment that we looked at our empty couches, made coffee, dressed for work, made our way uptown, left the door open, just in case. At night, when I got home from the Pilates studio and dance classes, we would scour the streets again. Walking on frozen sidewalks, calling Sam’s name–the desperation in our voices pitched with anguish. Despair. The colder...

Jan 2, 2014 – 30 Years Ago on Jan 2, 1984, Sam Todd had still not returned home…

Where was Sam? The idea that he had slept through the day in some strangers loft began to dissipate. There was still that hope but why hadn’t he called his parents to wish them a Happy New Year? That wasn’t like Sam. It was that phone call home to their parents that I remember. Adam’s face contorting to control his emotions, while also telling his folks that his older brother had disappeared. Making sure they had our phone number in NYC in case he showed up in Connecticut. We were supposed to start work again after the holiday, so most of us made our way to our jobs. I had Friday off and hoped Sam would be back by then, but promised to help search when...

#NYE 30 Years Ago Today – Sam Todd Disappeared and We Began Our Search

Waking up 30 years this morning is a bit of a haze in my memory. We had haunted the streets looking for Sam until it was almost dawn. My feet had frozen through my boots and my legs were checkered with intermittent blasts of icy air. I was wearing fishnets. Not sure what else… I had changed about six times, from a slip and bra to something warmer and leather. Sam’s brother, Adam, and our roommate, Eric–Adam’s best friend from Vassar, continued searching. Adam knew something was wrong. Our loft was 2,000 square feet and had communal space where we spent most of our time. That morning, we were having hair-of-the-dog bloody marys when Eric and Adam...

30 Years Ago #NYE – The Boy I was Dancing with Disappeared – Forever…

The email was in my inbox when I got home.  Christmas is always harrowing for me. Since I was 18, it has meant traipsing across the country to join the two halves of my family – Dad and everyone else. For many years it was easier because I too divorced my father, then in 1999, after writing a play with the help of Jules Feiffer, I was able to include my father in my life again. The rest of my family has not. This Christmas, my dad–Anne–spent Boxing Day at Jules Feiffer’s house with Broadway Producer, Jeffrey Seller and his partner Josh (who photographs homeless transgender teens). It is amazing that after so many years of having to hide my father...
