Shelter Island Mermaid

At the Pirates and Mermaid Benefit last weekend, I dolled up with the help of Collette‘s in Sag Harbor and the sea. Every shell, star fish, and piece of coral was found by this beach comber and the horseshoe crab wand is from a 2-year old molted skin (crabs molt many times as they grow larger).

Thanks to our host and hostess, James Goldman and Debbie Rodriguez, for opening their lovely home to a motley crew, mostly in full costume. We met a sea captain who had come all the way from Virginia Beach, local artists and other fascinating sailors, pirates and mermaids all enjoying a lovely evening together as Friends Of Peconic Bay.  My favorite bit of the night was the mermaid contest–haven’t done the catwalk since the last costume party we went to (as the naked chef and the naked sous chef).

The benefit helped raise money for oyster restoration, but yours truly made sure everyone knew about horseshoe crabs and why we should be protecting them too.
